Gardnerville
Gardnerville is a town in Douglas County, Nevada. The Topaz Lodge, on US Highway 395 at Topaz Lake, is the venue of the California Hawking Club's annual field meet, a multi-day gathering of falconers with displays, workshops and competitions.
The story of Gardnerville
Topaz Lodge uses a Gardnerville address (1979 US Highway 395 South) and stands on the northwest shore of Topaz Lake, on the California and Nevada border about 75 miles south of Reno. The present reservoir replaced a smaller natural lake formed by diverting the West Walker River into a nearby basin.
An earlier lake lay on the route Jedediah Smith followed in 1827 when he crossed the Sierra Nevada and travelled east into Nevada. A first dam was built in 1922, creating a reservoir of about 45,000 acre-feet, and a new levee in 1937 raised capacity to about 59,600 acre-feet.
The Walker River Irrigation District has owned and operated the levee and reservoir since construction. Today the lake is used for boating, camping and fishing, with year-round trout stocking by state wildlife agencies.
Falconry in Gardnerville
Topaz Lodge hosts the field meet of the California Hawking Club (CHC). The club's 53rd annual field meet took place there from 15 to 18 January 2025.
The programme includes bird displays, workshops, vendors, competitions and special speakers, and on Saturday morning the club's Sky Trials feature falcons flying for prizes.
The CHC formed partly out of the Santa Ana Valley Falconers' Association, and its first president and several charter members later attended the club's 25th anniversary field meet. Details of the agenda and registration are published on the club's website.
List your business on the pages of the events you attend, so buyers and partners find you before the show.
