The Saudi Press Agency reports that the coastal areas and plains of Makkah Region are again drawing falconers and falcon trappers, as the falconry season begins in October alongside the migratory bird season.

Where the season takes place

The governorates of Al-Lith and Al-Qunfudhah are named as well-known places for spotting migratory falcons, because their coastlines, plains and valleys suit the tracking of migration routes. The peregrine falcon is described as one of the most prominent species passing through the region.

Roles and services

Falcon trappers spot the migrating birds, while falconers care for, prepare, transport and train them. According to the report, the National Center for Falcons provides trappers with accommodation and transportation to the auction venue. The center also stresses the importance of protecting wildlife and complying with the rules that govern falcon trapping, hunting, transport and care.

Economic activity

The agency lists several areas that benefit during the season: trade in falcons and related supplies, the sale of hunting equipment, transport and care services, and the preparation of vehicles and camps. Specialized auctions add to the economic value of the practice.

For the trade

The National Center for Falcons Auction runs from 1 October to 30 November and is dedicated to falcons captured locally within the Kingdom during the trapping season. Buyers, transporters and veterinarians working with locally trapped birds can use these dates as a planning reference.

Frequently asked questions: Market

Is the international falcon market a free market?

No. Trade in falcons listed under CITES requires permits before any transaction, issued by the management authorities of the countries concerned.

Are auction record prices representative of the market?

No. Record prices are one-off events. They should not be read as the current price of a bird of the same species.
